OLD FRIENDS
Two old friends, hanging out on the curb. One is just a shell of what it once was, but not yet dead, it has a note which tells us it’s still operational. So it’s still lingering on, years passed its shelf date, and still available, if ever needed. The other must know it’s in the twilight of its useful life as well, with both demand and supply conspiring against it. I give these relics two years tops. One will be gutted and abandoned, the other carted away to an e-waste facility, or maybe even suffer the indignity of a landfill.
I almost wanted to put a quarter in (is it still a quarter?) and call home to see what DVD they wanted me to pick up to watch. But I didn’t have any change, and Zen already had plans to watch something, streaming, on the TV anyway.
Postscript
One day after posting this, on July 10, 2024, the bankrupt parent company of RedBox, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment Inc, announced that all 24,000 kiosks would be shutdown and RedBox would be fully liquidated.
